There’s a Photo You’ve Never Seen Before at the End of this Book

Last week, when Jordan Howard put Indiana ahead 48-41 with :56 to go against Southern Illinois, Brian, an non-IU fan with whom I was watching the game, turned to me and said, “Well, that should do it.”

I looked up from my iPad where I was multi-tasking with some incredibly important activity, like Angry Birds or Candy Crush, or reading a book. Wait, let’s just say I was reading a book. That sounds better. More intellectual.

OK, so I looked up from my book and laughed.

He looked at me, slightly perplexed.

“You are clearly unfamiliar with Indiana Football. This game is not over. I’m not saying we’re going to lose, but I’m saying it’s going to be interesting.”

As the team celebrated the dropped two-point conversion as the clock expired, as if they had caused it or something, he looked at me, stunned at how right I was.

I just nodded, knowingly.

I did all of this with almost no emotion. Because after years and years of being shown over and over and over again that none of it matters and we’ll end up at some point in October trying to figure out which teams we might possibly be able to beat to get to six wins. Getting all excited about a 48-47 win over Southern Illinois is a waste of my Excited Points for this football season.

Without completing the in-app purchase of the Excited Points Expansion Pack for $3.99, I’ve only got 14 to use between now and Hoosier Hysteria. And I’m all out of $3.99.

But then, with 3:58 to go in the 4th Quarter, Jameel Cook intercepted FIU Quarterback, Alex McGough and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. I startled myself by actually cheering out loud.

Man, that was something.

Despite seeing the normal Indiana Football level of tackling throughout most of the game, by that point in the game, FIU had only scored 22 points and we were winning by a full touchdown. FIU was threatening to score and tie the game up with under 4:00 to go. Pretty standard stuff really and exactly how IU Football games go week to week.

And then Cook went all pick-six on everyone and my decision to still be awake 3:20 into a college football game suddenly seemed very nearly worth it.

It’s far too early in the year to think this means something. Or to preminisce a return to the salad days. But I spontaneously, joyously, and without reservation expended an Excited Point.

That’s not nothing, kids.

And then there’s this.

Now, that is nothing. But it’s fun to see. And I’ll take it.
